Tell us about yourself before joining:
I have always been an active and outgoing person, I enjoy the outdoors and being physically challenged. I never played any sports and I am not especially competitive (at all) but I like to try new things and I do not give up easily. I had hit a rough patch after the loss of my younger brother and felt myself slipping into a deep depression and I knew I had to fight my way back with fitness and my faith. I did a triathlon in 2014 just to see if I could…unbelievable… I wasn’t dead last but I did finish and I felt some emotional healing start to happen on that course and I wanted to build on it. I had heard lots of crazy things about CrossFit and my cousin had just joined a box near her and encouraged me to look for one near me.
What is the biggest difference you’ve noticed since joining?
Its so hard to put this answer into words but I just feel “better” …It has become a coping skill to manage my stressors, it has been so physically challenging, more than ANYTHING I have ever done. I thrive on accountability and consistency…I look forward to the different friends to work out with and sometimes I even look forward to the workouts!!! I never expected to like it so much. I love all of the other members and the atmosphere in the box. I love supporting others as I need so much support as well from the coaches and each one genuinely cares.
CrossFit1620 was built on everything Chickie represents. It’s a great feeling when an athlete PRs or has an "Ah ha!" moment in their fitness journey. However, confidence is a major piece to the puzzle that some overlook. When she stepped foot in the door, there was no doubt the determination was there. The confidence she has gained is remarkable from day one to the present. I couldn’t be more proud of her and can’t wait to see what the future holds.
What is your proudest CrossFit moment?
I don’t know if I can pick one, I have felt proud many times walking out the door just finishing a workout I did not think I could do. Quite honestly, I am proud that I am still participating and have not even thought about giving up. I can’t imagine life without this as part of my day.
How did you hear about us?
I looked up Crossfit online after my cousin mentioned it a million times! I was super reluctant because she’s a pretty tough chick and I just am not wired up for this kind of thing, or so I thought.
Chickie started with us in a much different place that she is in now. She had to conquer and overcome some things to get where she is at. The biggest transformation for her has been mentally, she truly believes that SHE CAN do this. That’s the greatest thing going! Don’t even get me started on who she is and the joy she brings because I can talk for days on that. She. Is. Special. All love all the time. I am truly grateful and lucky to call her a friend.
What is your next goal?
I have so many goals, I would really like to get this running thing figured out. I have enjoyed trail running in the woods with my music always but I never timed myself, I just ran to run..like a turtle…but I would like to continue to push myself in each WOD and see what I am capable of.
What would your perfect WOD look like?
Each one is so different…but it would include dead lifts and back squats.
Chickie is a beacon of happiness and positivity at every class she shows up too! She has a way of making you feel like you’ve known each other for years, and to new members that is a welcomed gift! Since day one Chickie has come in and crushed goal after goal. I can’t wait to see what the next chapter has in store for her.
What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit or think of giving it a try?
I would encourage anybody considering it to go for it….The support is key and I was very reluctant. I emailed Jon and met him before I started…It was months before I had determined I had made a good decision and I would be able to sustain this. I couldn’t of done it without the extraordinary family of members.
Any other thoughts?
My final thought would be just one of gratitude. I am so grateful that this is part of my life, I am grateful for the relationships, I am grateful my husband has now become part of this community. I look forward to helping to do my part to support the other members so this community of athletes and to continually improve in all aspects.
Chickie’s attitude is everything. When the workout is going to get tough (when is it not tough?!?) she knows how to attack it and give it her all. Chickie makes the athletes around her feel comfortable and supported throughout their workouts too! A true positive force in our box.
