Tell us about yourself before joining CrossFit.
For most of my life I’ve been involved in sports, especially team sports, because competition and team work drive my interest and energy. Being an older athlete going to the gym independently was never sustainable or motivating. CrossFit is the perfect blend of focusing on your personal athletic strengths and weakness in a supportive community environment. For me, CrossFit is always challenging, engaging and motivating to be able to compete and measure progress for myself and with every level of athletes and age group at the box.
What is the biggest difference you’ve noticed since joining?
The workouts have not only made me feel and look my best. It’s spilled over to more energy, focus and confidence at work and in the community. I am in better shape now then I was in my thirties. I am too vain to give in to old age!
"Since the day I met Bruce he’s been the definition of consistency. He continues to set goals for himself, achieve them and move on to the next. Most importantly he is a great member of our community, encourages others and shares his experiences that may help other athletes."
What is your proudest CrossFit moment?
What’s awesome about CrossFit is that the PRs and achievements keep coming. I especially love the Open as I think it brings out the best in athletes. For me, it was completing my first bar muscle up during the Open. Recently a big achievement was connecting 50+ double-unders, as this was the bane of my existence for 3 years.
How did you hear about us?
I’d been a CrossFit athlete for a while and value the difference coaches make and followed a couple of my favorite coaches (Jonathan and Jimmy) to CrossFit1620.
What is your next goal?
I like having a few short-term goals such as 100 double-unders or completing a ring muscle up. I also need to greatly improve my mobility. My stretch goal would be to finish in the top 200 people and make regionals in my age group at the Open.
What would your perfect WOD look like?
Any workout using my large backside! Squats, wall balls, box jumps, and yes even Thrusters. It would probably be a partner WOD and have loud funk music blasting for motivation.
What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit or think of giving it a try?
- Be patient and focus on technique - trust the process!
- Engage your coaches – trust the process!
- Scale when needed, results will come – trust the process!
Bruce’s Hard work, dedication and determination are amazingly great qualities. They pale in comparison to his positive can do-attitude, coach ability, and his willingness to go out of his way to meet new athletes and make new people feel welcome at the box. Every session is better with Bruce in it.
Any other thoughts?
Good sleep and eating clean elevate an athlete’s performance. I can’t thank my beautiful wife Rhonda enough for her awesome cooking and nutrition! Without her and CrossFit1620 I would probably still be shaped like a pear.
I would like to Thank and congratulate the 1620 Team for creating such an outstanding box and community! It is your dedication and passion for helping others improve that have attributed to such a positive and rewarding environment for athletes of all levels and all ages.
