Tell us about yourself before joining:
Before I joined CrossFit I was fairly active. I race cars which forces me to stay in good shape. I ran a lot and lifted weights in the gym. I was not nearly as consistent as I am with CrossFit1620. I would either be in a cardio phase or a weightlifting phase, getting better at one but not both at the same time. Two months before I joined CrossFit1620 I ran the Spartan Beast for the third time, I noticed that through all the cardio training for the beast I had lost a lot of strength, which led me to find CrossFit1620.
What is the biggest difference you’ve noticed since joining?
The biggest difference I have noticed in myself since joining CrossFit1620 is that my strength has improved, while my cardio is also just as good, if not better, than it was before starting Crossfit. I have also noticed that I move better and more easily throughout my day.
What is your proudest CrossFit moment?
My proudest moment in CrossFit is definitely when I overhead squat 195 lbs. for the first time. When I first started CrossFit1620 I had a tough time keeping 95 lbs. over my head. It feels good to see improvements. Deadlifting 400 lbs. was pretty cool too.
How did you hear about us?
I heard about 1620 through my wife, Lauren. She had gone to Upper Cape CrossFit in the past and loved the experience of CrossFit, but left because of schedules and travel. When she heard John and Jimmy had started CrossFit1620 she was really interested in finding something we could share together, or even better, share as a family. I was ready for a new challenge so we decided to go to an elements class. I was definitely hooked after the first class. What I thought was really cool about CrossFit 1620 was how all the coaches really cared about people moving correctly, and their attention to the details.
What is your next goal?
My constant goal is to get stronger, fitter, faster. I would like to add more volume in the future, but that can be tricky with my already busy schedule. As far as movement goals, I would like to get handstand walks and ring muscle ups. The biggest thing I would like to focus on is improving my form and staying healthy throughout the year.
What would your perfect WOD look like?
My perfect WOD would have intermediate-weighted cleans or power snatches with pull-ups and running. I love the lifting aspect, and enjoy running and pull-ups. Nothing beats the sound of a barbell crashing down as you go running out the door.
What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit or think of giving it a try?
My advice to anyone thinking about CrossFit is to walk through the door and do it. It's good to get out of your comfort zone, and do something you don’t feel comfortable doing. Every single person at CrossFit 1620 started by walking through that door. My advice to newer members: always show up on the days you don’t like the WOD or don’t think you can do whatever is programmed. There is always a scale that you can do, and always a way to improve your skills.
Any other thoughts?
My family and I really enjoy CrossFit 1620. The coaching staff is awesome, and the community is, too. I always trust that I am getting the best coaching advice for my wellbeing. My whole family loves attending. My kids enjoy their classes with Kali, my wife loves it, and my kids even enjoy coming and hanging out at childcare while my wife and I workout. Thanks for a great community!
