Tell us about yourself before joining CrossFit.
Before CrossFit I worked out at a gym and rode a Peleton bike. I did the workouts by myself so no one to help motivate me or push me. It was too easy to just stop! The heaviest weight I lifted was 10#! Not exactly an athlete. I now realize that what I considered to be a “workout” is quite different from my previous experience. After doing CrossFitfor a few months, I actually found I do have muscles!
What is the biggest difference you’ve noticed since joining?
I am in much better shape physically, mentally and emotionally. I feel part of a big family. Knowing that the people you are in class with are not judging you but rather encouraging and supporting you makes it easier to do workouts that would normally give you anxiety when you read what is scheduled.
"Barbara has been nothing but consistent and positive throughout her time at CrossFit1620. She gives 100% in everything that she does, whether that’s her workout or in the kids room. The kids ask to come so they can spend the hour with her! We joke and say that Barbara is life goals, but it’s not a joke. Have you seen those guns? She is a role model to all of us both inside and outside of the gym."
What is your proudest CrossFit moment?
My proudest moment was completing my first CrossFit1620 Challenge just a few months after starting CrossFit1620 and not finishing last!
How did you hear about us?
My oldest son did CrossFit in Ashland. He invited Ted to do a partner WOD. Ted enjoyed the class so he researched a CrossFIt gym closer to home. After Ted spoke with Coach Jonathan, he decided to give CrossFit1620 a try. The experience was so good that after a few months Ted encouraged me to give it try. Best decision I made!
Barbara personifies hard work and dedication. She shows up no matter the WOD and gives it her all. An often-heard phrase from Barbara is, “I’ll give it a try,” and she really means it. Consistently happy to work with everyone and welcome new folks makes Barbara approachable and an invaluable member of our community. Plus, have you seen those guns?!
What is your next goal?
My next goal is to work technically on the disciplines I struggle with–overhead weight movements and running.
What would your perfect WOD look like?
My perfect WOD would involve deadlifts, back squats & bodyweight tabata.
What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit or think of giving it a try?
DO IT! Having 1 hour of intense exercise that is taught by fantastic, professional, friendly, knowledgeable coaches, is exhausting yet exhilarating. The critique you may receive is done in a helpful, in your best interest manner.
Any other thoughts?
I am grateful to the owners, the coaches and the athletes for making this experience for me one that has helped me challenge myself while getting stronger and healthier.
